Looking for a PR/Marketing person

Posted on Craigslist:

Summary:
I’m a small startup looking for a *highly* motivated college grad with some sales/marketing/PR experience. You will be the sole PR/marketing person for VocabSushi.com, a website that helps students learn vocabulary through contextual examples. Your job will consist of emailing blogs, reporters, teachers, tutors and other outlets about the site and the licensed product (a version of the site geared towards schools and tutoring companies). The goal is to get press coverage as well as business leads (schools/teachers/tutors that are interested).

We are already enjoying a good deal of daily sign ups, teacher interest and press. This is NOT a hard site to sell as it does a great service, is free and has no ads - so it’s perfect for students and education companies. Virtually everyone who uses the site really enjoys it.

Job Goals:
Get blog posts or publications that review VocabSushi (ideally with an interview)
Build brand recognition across education sites and services
Business development via obtaining new sales leads

Daily Responsibilities (time per day, expected output):

  • Email/phone outreach, follow up calls (5.5 hrs):
-Mainstream Education reporters, pitch different story angles (5 emails)
    -Tech blogs (10 emails)
-NYC Schools, goal is to get a meeting (5 emails)
    -Education blogs (5 emails)
-Batch email list of teachers, 100 per day, monitor results, change email accordingly
-List of 100+ sites on my list, most would be sales leads (4 emails)
  • Find speaking engagements (1 hr):
-Query Meetup.com groups to find opportunity
-Locate demo opportunity on sites like “theconferencecalendar.com”
  • Blog (.5 hr):
-Monitor Google analytics for new mentions of VS that users are coming from and post
-Write 2 short posts per day that discuss words, or articles that are interesting
  • Organize (.5 hr):
-Build and maintain a spreadsheet of all new contacts
-Keep track of dates everyone was contacted, (Email #1 -> Call #1 -> Email #2 -> Call #2)

Requirements:

  • College degree (pref major or focus on journalism, writing, PR)
  • Strong interest in education/students/schools
  • Great at practical multitasking (having 3-5 windows open, knows keyboard shortcuts in word/gmail/firefox, can move fast between things and be efficient)
  • Web savvy - Need to be able to quickly google and search for a lot of stuff, you also need to *know* the product you’re pitching
  • Really detail oriented, organized - NO typos or mistakes on emails, be prepared before you call anyone and take notes, keep track of what you do in a spreadsheet
  • Be ready to learn about the website and its features as you’ll need to be able to discuss it confidently with prospective buyers
  • Creative - you’ll need to come up with new ways to pitch the site to many people depending on what works
  • Confident on the phone and eager to make follow up calls without hesitation

Please Email:

  • Resume
  • Cover letter (explain why you’re a good match)
  • Sample(s) of writing (email pitches, articles, PR copy, whatever)

I’ll review and call you in to have an interview, probably at a coffee shop on the UWS.

Time commitment:
40 hr / wk for 1 month
Work from home
1 hr meeting each weekend (unpaid) for status updates (if necessary)
Ideal if you live near Columbia/UWS

Pay:
$1,000 for the month (This can change if, at the end of the month, revenue is increased and you’ve done a stellar job)
Use Skype for calls or your landline/vonage/etc (I will pay for the unlimited plan, within reason)

Future:
I’d like this to become a more permanent position if things work out and if your time results in increased sales/press. It may morph into more of a sales position if there is a need.

Thanks,
Jeff
